The gut microbiome is a part of our body that responds to the food we eat. The types of food we consume, such as fiber, starch, and protein, can greatly affect the composition of the microbiome. This means that changes in our diet can cause the microbiome to change quickly. Because different bacteria in the microbiome can perform similar functions, they can produce important substances that are good for our health. When dogs are sick, the changes in their microbiome are more noticeable compared to healthy dogs on different diets. By making changes to their diet and adding prebiotics and probiotics, we can help improve the variety of bacteria in the microbiome and the production of important substances in sick dogs.
